Man City make Croatian rising star Ante Palaversa their second January signing

Manchester City have completed the signing of Croatia U-19 midfielder Ante Palaversa from Hajduk Split.

The reigning Premier League champions have splashed out a reported £4.1m fee for the 18-year-old, who will remain on loan at Hajduk on loan until the summer of 2020.

Who is Ante Palaversa? Five key things to know…

  1. 18-year-old Palaversa is a central-midfielder equally adept at ball retention and tackling.
  2. Palaversa is the captain of the Croatia U-19 side and has 17 appearances for Hajduk Split under his belt this season, scoring twice.
  3. Following his £4.1m move to Man City, the youngster will remain on loan in Croatia until the summer of 2020.
  4. Palaversa has named City as “one of the biggest clubs in the world” and thanked them for their trust in him.

Palaversa has 11 caps for Croatia’s U-19 side and has been lauded as one of the country’s most talented youngsters right now, with some comparing him to Germany and Real Madrid midfielder, Toni Kroos, due to his comfort in possession and robust approach without it.

Speaking to the official Hajduk Split website, Palaversa said: “I’m glad the work of Hajduk’s academy has been recognised by one of the world’s biggest clubs. Thanks to Manchester City for the trust in me.

“There is still a lot of work ahead, I’ve not yet shown everything I can and I hope to play for Hajduk to justify the trust shown.”

Palaversa has made 17 appearances for Hajduk this season, scoring twice, and becomes City’s second signing of the January window following Ko Itakura’s arrival from Kawasaki Frontale.

Manchester City, meanwhile, sit five points behind Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, having lost 2-1 to Newcastle on Tuesday.

The Citizens face Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Guardiola excludes Real Madrid from his top three European clubs

Given his success with Barcelona and his Catalan roots, Pep Guardiola probably doesn’t have many friends in Madrid as it is.

However, he will have even less following his answer when asked to name the best clubs in Europe over the last decade.

The 48-year-old included two of his former clubs in that list but left out Real, despite Los Blancos winning three of the past four Champions League titles.

“I’ve said many times: what are the best teams in the last decade? Juventus, Bayern Munich, Barcelona,” Guardiola told the Manchester Evening News.

“These are the three best teams in Europe. Why? Because every season they win the league, every season they win the cups, every season they are there. Because they are the best.”
